The new Minstermen boss was introduced the media on Monday having give up a promotion push at Gateshead to try and turn things around at Bootham Crescent a division below.
Some suggested he would have to start planning for next season now but that’s not the way he sees it.
York are 17th in the National League North and already nine points shy of the top seven.
Watson won’t throw in the towel until it’s not possible but says he is looking for a reaction from the club’s players - starting with Saturday’s trip to in-form Stockport County.
“We have 17 matches left, is that enough? We’ll have to see,” the new manager said.
“The question is if we have what it takes to make a real dash for the play-offs, but we’ll certainly not stop trying.
“I won’t give up until it’s a mathematical impossibility. If it’s not meant to be then it’s not mean to be but we have to try.”
Watson knows how demanding his first game in charge will be.
“Stockport are a big club but we’ve got to go there and try to hit the ground running,” the former Newcastle United player added.
“We’re back to square one but we need to get results as soon as possible if we’re going to climb the table.”
