It's Better Than Beckham! Rod Salutes Spillane

Rod Stringer labelled Mickey Spillane‘s wonder goal from his own half as better than Beckham!

Chelmsford City won 3-2 at Wealdstone and that first-half blockbuster got Stringer’s side up and running.

But Stringer says all his side’s goals were great - and now wants them to start performing in their home games like they are on the road.

“Beckham may have started the craze all those years ago but Mickey has gone one better with that,” the manager told the National League’s Oli Osborn. “He’s getting older, but he’s got that in his locker.

“He must be 60 yards out and it was a fantastic goal, in fact every goal was incredible. Micky’s will win our goal of the day competition but they were all very, very, very good.”

Now to get more at Melbourne, where they have just won once all season.

“Our away form is excellent,” Stringer said. “We’ve scored six at Hungerford, five at Hemel and three here but we’ve struggled at home. We know why, and we’ve got to rectify it.

“It was a really good performance. We went 3-0 up, nobody could have argued with that, and we controlled the game for 60 minutes.

“Then they scored just after we got our third and that could have been a game changer. We struggled to cope.

“We dug-in. We protected the lead with our lives, and we were brave at the end - we got over the line. Not many teams will win at Wealdstone, they’ll be in the top three of four come the end so this was a great three points.”
