Inspirational Super Kev Ready For His Next Big Mission!

By Sam Elliott

Kevin Webber enjoys a challenge. In fact he thrives on them. In 2014 he was told he was likely to have two years left to live.

Over four years later, he’s not only gearing up for a week-long marathon touring many of the north’s National League clubs, he’s already pondering his next challenge.

“I’m already thinking about walking or running to every single National League club,” said the 53-year-old.

“We’ll see where that goes, but first things first - I’ve got quite a big week ahead of me!”

He’s had bigger, mind you. Since teaming up with Prostate Cancer, we have been lucky enough to get to know Kevin closely.

This year already he continued his crusade to raise money as well as the equally critical awareness, which included a marathon in the Sahara desert. And of course three months or so ago he did ‘7 marathons in 7 business days’ alongside our very own Michael Tattersall plus many friends along the way.

But with Non-League Day fast approaching, he couldn’t turn down the chance to get his trainers back on - even if he is gearing his next endurance test more towards clubs directly, not just money raising.

He starts his mission at Blyth Spartans on Sunday before arriving at Gateshead at 6pm. Then it’s off to friend Jeff Stelling’s Hartlepool United as Tuesday sees him head to Darlington via Spennymoor.

Wednesday is the 32 mile walk to York City before getting to Harrogate Town. From there he goes to Guiseley before Bradford Park Avenue.

Then it’s final stop FC Halifax for their live BT Sport game with Chesterfield where he will enjoy a well-earned beer at the Shay.

He added: “It’s not a fund-raiser a such, although every penny is always gratefully received.

“This is more about getting into clubs, and putting across the message of how important a trip to the doctors is and how speed is so crucial.

“If your club averages say 800 supporters, 100 will come into close contact with the disease. As things stand, 20 of them will die.

“That is a large number of people and if we can go some way to getting that figure down by raising awareness and getting people to go and see their doctor then it’s a fight we’ll win.”

Kevin, a huge Wimbledon fan all his life, has some unfinished business at Halifax to attend to.

“Don’t worry, I’ll make sure I’m inside the ground this time,” he adds. “I’ve come pretty close once before but I’ll be getting it ticked off my list next Saturday.

“Back in 1981, Wimbledon needed a point to win promotion from the old third division. We bounced onto a coach to see it happen but there was a dark cloud hanging over it.

“Every time we stopped, we called the them to ask if it was still on. No problem, we were told. There was no twitter back then!

“We eventually got to the ground and with five minutes to go it was off. I never did go back, we got what we needed in the next home game. So all these years later I’m determined to see a game!”
