Inspirational Alex Fletcher Announces Bath City Departure

The Twerton Park favourite has told fans of his decision with manager Jerry Gill saying he will “forever be an inspiration to us all”.

The 24-year-old needed surgery and was in a coma for five days following the accident during a match against Dulwich Hamlet in November 2022.

In August he was given the all clear to play again, nine months after suffering a serious head injury when he collided with a concrete wall.

But he has made the decision to depart the National League South club with the Romans saying: “We’re all immeasurably proud of Alex’s achievements and we wish him, and his family, all the best for the future.”

The player himself took to Instagram to announce he will be stepping into an exciting new role with the PFA.

“Today marks a year since the accident which took me to the brink of losing my life,” he wrote. “In the past year, I’ve beaten ICU, learnt to eat, drink and walk again. I tentatively stepped back onto the pitch just 7 weeks post surgery on Boxing Day.

“I made it down the aisle for my own wedding to @elliebfletcher , the strongest woman I know, which I almost didn’t get the opportunity to live for.

“I’ve been through pain barriers that I never knew I had to get back to playing the sport which made me, but that almost destroyed me.

“I’m now excited to be starting a new chapter in my career, both on and off the pitch.
As I part ways with @bathcityfc , I’d like to take this opportunity to thank every single individual connected to the football club and reiterate that had it not been for your love, empathy and compassion over the last 12 months, I would not be where I am today. I wish all the best to the club and my teammates for the rest of the season and beyond.
