Defeat for Tranmere at the Crabble in midweek would have handed the National League title to Macclesfield Town.
Relentless Rovers just won’t let the Silkmen sneak over the line and fans still hold out hope that their now seven point lead can still be overturned.
The 1-0 win at Dover was secured by Andy Cook, now the National League’s leading scorer with 25.
Mellon, whose team have a game in hand over the leaders, is non committal on the title race being on - but is thrilled by how his players are reacting.
That’s not a surprise. Rovers have now won their last five and are looking a completely different side to the one who started the season so slowly and limped in the promotion final of 2017.
Mellon said: “It’s about what we have to do at Tranmere Rovers and that’s win games of football. Nothing and nobody else.
“We have just got to keep going. I mean that. We will not lose our focus. You can’t afford to do that at a club like ours.
“We’re fighting to just keep winning games. We’ve got another difficult one on the road on Saturday and we will try to go and win that but that’s what it’s about.
“Against Dover I thought we were brilliant. We did everything that was asked of us and I thought we were magnificent. It was the game of my dreams!
“Every game in this league poses different challenges but top marks to every one of them, I thought they were superb.”
Asked what was the difference between Tranmere Rovers of 2017 and Tranmere Rovers of 2018 the boss wasn’t quick to scream progression.
“I think the main thing is that this group have been together an extra year now,” he said.
“I think experience brings people closer together and they are that a year down the line.
“A quick word too for the supporters. Most of them would have been here when the game was called off at short notice on Good Friday.
“They were back in their numbers and we are truly privileged to have them behind us. To have their backing so far away from home is fantastic.”
