They will regain the leadership for the first time since December if they win at Boreham Wood on Tuesday night.
Fans feared their title chances were all-but over last month after four straight defeats.
But new boss Hughes has made a great start and they are now going for their fourth victory in a row.
They must beware the wounded animal, he has warned.
Our of sorts Wood lost 4-0 at home to Hartlepool on Saturday and they haven’t now won in seven.
Hughes expects Luke Garrard to have his team pumped up after already beating some of the top sides this season.
"It is a massive incentive to know that if we win we go top," said Hughes in his press briefing after Saturday’s victory at Havant.
“You’re there to be shot at once you are, but we know it’s a big game for us.
“To go top would be a huge boost for everyone at the club and give us a lot of confidence going forward.
“Boreham Wood will be a big challenge, we know that. It won’t be an easy game, but we go there with confidence.”
