But the Red Dragons played within themselves and left empty handed after Josh Hawkes’ first half penalty proved costly.
It was Wrexham’s third defeat in four matches after losses to Barrow and Leyton Orient this month.
Unhappy Hughes said his players went missing at exactly the wrong time.
“If we are being completely honest with ourselves we weren’t good enough,” said the manager.
“I don’t think we showed the best side of our attacking game and at times we over played.
“On reflection it just wasn’t good enough from us.
“We were a little bit tame going forward, and we have got to offer a fair bit more than that.
“This was a chance for us and we didn’t take it - that’s the big disappointment.”
