Huge Crowds Are Coming As The Action Heats Up

By Sam Elliott

Another brilliant Vanarama National League weekend is nearly here so let’s take a little look at what’s in store on Saturday afternoon.

There will be a season best crowd at Boundary Park as Oldham Athletic throw open their doors for £1 - thus face Kidderminster with the entrance price slashed to welcome home charity hero owner Frank Rothwell.

Around 12,000 will see the game as the club celebrate his 3,000-mile Atlantic row, raising over £300,000 for Alzheimer's Research UK.

Chesterfield’s quest to get the title nailed as quickly as possible sees them return to home soil after what - by their standards - must be considered a bit of a blip.

A rare home draw with Ebbsfleet was followed by defeat at Bromley and there’s not been many three-game winless runs in recent years. Rochdale will try to make life difficult for them as their play-off hopes ebb away.

The relegation landscape changes with every game and Woking fans will be fearing the worst if they fail to defeat Wealdstone at home. The Stones themselves are just two places above the bottom four now, but do have games in hand.

There’s another huge game between two of the teams in the thick of it. Dorking Wanderers, whose home form is hindering an escape, welcome Ebbsfleet United. The Kent club have two wins from two under Danny Searle and are now level on points with Marc White’s men, sitting outside the bottom four thanks to their superior goal difference.

Bottom club Oxford City have it all to do now but want to stand in Gateshead’s play-off way when they welcome them to the International Stadium.

Southend United got a much-needed win at Maidenhead on Tuesday and Kevin Maher is demanding they follow that up by putting in another performance against Aldershot Town, who have impressively dispatched Barnet and Altrincham inside the past seven days.

Hartlepool United fans have eyes for the top seven all of a sudden and Kevin Phillips has told him players just to keep on winning - they’re at Solihull Moors who are fourth, but Andy Whing knows they’re just one bad day away from slipping outside the play-off pack.

Two goalkeepers meet in the dug-out for the live TNT Sports game and you can read a preview of Eastleigh’s match with second-place Bromley here.

Elsewhere, FC Halifax Town take their good form to Dagenham as Alan Devonshire’s Maidenhead look to arrest their slump at Altrincham.

Barnet tackle York City while Boreham Wood welcome AFC Fylde, with both teams a little too close to the bottom four for comfort.
