Honest Gray Doesn’t Hold Back After York Slump Again

Martin Gray gave a frank assessment of York City’s season, saying: this club deserves better and things must change.

On Saturday a 3-2 home defeat to out of form Tamworth reduced the new Minstermen manager to talk openly about the Vanarama National League North club’s problems. Watch Match Highlights Here.

They are now 15 points off leaders Harrogate Town, and have let in eight goals in their previous three matches.

Back to back 3-2 defeats after losing to Salford City last week have given the manager a lot to think about.

Gray, who arrived from Darlington earlier in October, says the bedding in period is now at an end.

"The mistakes are individual errors,” Gray told the club’s website after the Tamworth loss. “You can coach and put in a structure which you want - and work very hard week-in, week-out - but you can't account for errors and we are making big errors and it is costing us massively.

“If you see the possession we are giving away, the players are under no pressure. That's what disappoints you.

“On the training ground, when there's no pressure, they keep the ball - but you have got to be able to deal with the pressure and expectations at York City. This club deserves better. It hurts.

"Things have got to change. Personnel has got to change. If we don't, we will never move forward. I won't allow that to happen. We have seen everything over four weeks now and things have got to change and personnel has got to change - otherwise we will never move forward.

"I am the manager and I pride myself on what we do. The lads have got to start to showing some character now, start listening, and cut out the errors. If you don't, we will never be able to progress.

"We showed great desire and hunger at 2-0 down to get back in to 2-2. That is a positive. But that doesn't take away the mistakes that we made.”
