History Not The Only Thing BT Sport Offer On Good Friday

By Sam Elliott

The third oldest professional football club in the world face the eldest of them all, but hold the history for a moment.

They have both been getting a vision of the future lately and there’s a lot to be excited about.

While Wrexham’s story has gone global, Notts County are also beginning a brave new era.

You couldn’t have missed the Dragons’ Hollywood takeover being rubber stamped earlier this year.

Wrexham, with the support of those A Listers, want to get the ball rolling on their project this year - before Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney get their feet under the Racecourse table.

Who wouldn’t get a little twitchy when a new boss bowls up?

If manager Dean Keates was anxious about the ambitious actors’ arrival, he certainly has shown it.

The next mission is to impress in front of the BT Sport cameras on Good Friday, which kicks-off at 12.15pm.

“The club are in a great position going forward and the future looks great,” Keates said after the takeover was rubber stamped.

"It is great for the publicity of the football club; it has always been known for FA Cup shocks, established league teams, it has had good European days previously.

“Now it is writing another chapter in its history as well."

He is quick to insist the team haven’t been sparked into life by the arrival of their high-profile new owners.

Wrexham haven’t dropped three points since February’s visit to Aldershot Town, their only defeat in 14.

But last week they did lose those earned against Dover, of course, and manager Keates was pleased with how his team reacted to that news.

The north Wales club beat Bromley 3-0 last time out and their scoring issues of years gone by could be a thing of that past.

They have now hit 13 goals in the past six matches and the manager says the signs are good.

“All we can do is what we did on Saturday - a reaction and getting three points back on the board,” he said.

"I couldn't be any more happy with the players, they are giving it everything.”

But this is not the first week Ian Burchnall dreamed of after taking the Notts County job.

Fans know their own future is bright, even if it has been a slow start for their new head coach.

Losing out on a trip to Wembley last Saturday was not the way he wanted to introduce himself to those supporters.

A shot-shy home defeat to Aldershot Town on Tuesday wasn’t the reaction he wanted to losing on penalties to AFC Hornchurch, either.

“I watched a few games from before I came in and you can see there’s a confidence thing that they need to pick up,” he said on the club’s YouTube channel.

“We didn’t have enough tempo to break Aldershot down, we didn’t create enough for the amount of ball we had.

“We have got to be a bit more clinical, and we’ve got to be a bit more braver.

“I want to see the team being a bit more dynamic, we need to be more aggressive and we have to move the ball quicker.”

This is the first time the two former Football League heavyweights have met this season.

The first game, also due to be live on BT Sport and scheduled for February, feel foul of the early 2021 freeze.

“We need a reaction and we need to get the next win as soon as possible,” new boss Burchnall added.
