Yates masterminded Solihull Moors’ survival in the National League last season – moving on to newly-promoted Macclesfield at the end of the last campaign – and was full of praise for Phil Parkinson’s side.
“We had to hold our hands up today and say they were excellent,” Yates told the Silkmen’s official video service.
“They kept the ball and did very well. We’ve had the runaround both with the ball and without it. Physically they were better than us tonight. You’ve got to give them credit.”
Parkinson’s side pressurised from the off and were rewarded after seven minutes when Tom Peers pounced on a rebound to put Alty ahead.
Altrincham have been in good form so far in pre-season – beating Rhyl and Kidsgrove Athletic before Macclesfield – scoring eight goals in the process.
The Moss Lane outfit start their National League North campaign against Leamington on August 4.
