Herring 'No Hero' But Brilliant Boss Keeps Clean Sheet!

Hungerford’s Ian Herring wanted to put his boots to one side this season and focus on managing the Crusaders without having to play too often.

The defender has always been a bit of a warrior, but he accepted the time is right to play his part more from the touchline rather than in the middle of the backline.

But on Tuesday the Town player-boss had to not only get his size nines back on - he had to find some gloves as well!

After an injury to keeper Jokull Andresson and with no number two of the bench there was only one thing for it.

Problem is they were playing free-scoring Hemel Hempstead - whose business in the transfer market this summer has left them with an attacking to be feared.

That didn’t bother Herring. He came on and kept a clean sheet as Hungerford grabbed an impressive 0-0 draw.

“It would’ve been a good point there in normal circumstances, let alone what happened," he told us.

“Heroics? I don’t know about that! Our physio Stacey was the hero looking after Jokull so well. Jokull’s fine now, in good spirits but gutted he can’t play for 21 days minimum.

“The clean sheet was down to the ten in front of me. It really shows how well the lads defended as a group to restrict them to one shot.”

He’s done it all before - and it was the same result!

“I have been in nets a few years ago, away at Bashley for Hungerford, and it was another clean sheet I believe!" he smiled.

“I go in goal in training every so often for a bit of fun. Maybe I’m a lucky charm!”
