Happy Harrison saw Michael Woods convert a winning goal five minutes into injury time to send the Victoria Park fans home in great spirits.
It made matters worse for Barrow but the Pools boss insisted he was more content with the gutsy win than if his side racked up a cricket scoreline.
It wasn't quite enough to take Hartlepool into the top half of the Vanarama National League table but Harrison knows his team are potentially just a win away from the play-off places.
“It’s always nice to win a game like that," the manager told the club's official website.
“It was just nice for the players because they worked so hard again. The lads all put a shift in and I was so pleased they got their reward at the end.
“We have talked about getting more balls in the box so it’s very apt that a goal has come from a cross and Woodsy finished it off perfectly."
He added: “I think that type of win gives you more spring in your step than a comfortable win does because of the drama at the end – it brings everyone together.
“The boys have to take all the credit because they kept on going and kept on believing they would get a goal.”
