But there was a big upset in one that did get the referee`s nod, and that came at Scraley Road where Bostik League North side Heybridge Swifts knocked out Vanarama National League South promotion-chasers Hampton & Richmond Borough in their replay.
Swifts, who have already accounted for higher-level opposition such as Metropolitan Police, Frome Town, Tonbridge Angels and Dorchester Town in the Emirates FA Cup and Trophy to date this season, had a massive help in that the Beavers had goalkeeper Sam Howes dismissed after just 6 minutes for denying a goalscoring opportunity.
Luke Callender stepped up for the hosts to rifle the penalty past substitute `keeper Luke Sheldrick.
Lewis Godbold extended the Swifts’ lead 10 minutes later before Hampton’s Max Kretzschmar managed to get one on the board for the Beavers right before the interval.
Kretzschmar converted a spot-kick for Hampton on 55 minutes to bring the visitors level, but Godbold got his second 5 minutes later to put the Essex team back in front.
Hampton won a second penalty inside the last 10 minutes but this time Swifts `keeper Dan Sambridge guessed correctly and pushed away Kretzschmar’s kick to preserve the lead and the Swifts’ place in the Second Round.
National League club Boreham Wood needed a penalty shoot-out to overcome National League South side Dartford in their replay, with the score 2-2 at the end of extra-time.
The Darts had twice led the game, with Ryan Hayes opening the scoring 7 minutes after half-time.
Bruno Andrade levelled the scoring after 73 minutes, with a superb solo effort, but the Darts were soon in the lead again, thanks to on-loan forward Danny Mills just 4 minutes later.
With 10 minutes of stoppage time added on, Shaun Jeffers pulled it level once again.
The two sides failed to score in extra-time, but Wood won a nervy penalty shoot-out to go through, thanks to `keeper Grant Smith, who saved three out of four Darts penalties.
Blyth Spartans won the delayed all-National League North tie with AFC Telford United at Croft Park.
What turned out to be the only goal of a tight game came after just 9 minutes.
Telford`s Jordan Lussey was adjudged to have brought down the lively Jarrett Rivers and Dale Hopson duly converted the resulting penalty.
The Bucks did well defensively, without threatening at the other end too much.
Two teams flying high in their respective divisions, National League North Brackley Town and National League South Braintree Town, met at St James`s Park in their replay and it went the way of the home side 2-0.
Brackley had beaten the Iron 4-1 in the Emirates FA Cup earlier in the season, but this was a much more even affair, showing the progress the visitors are beginning to make under Brad Quinton.
It was fairly even-steven in the first half, but just 6 minutes into the second half, Brackley broke the deadlock when, shortly after Iron `keeper Nathan McDonald had made a good save to maintain parity, when Matt Lowe put Brackley ahead.
It was almost 2-0 but for a clearance off the line to deny Ben Tilney 5 minutes later but with Braintree unable to battle back, a second goal did eventually come for the hosts.
It came with 11 minutes left from a direct free-kick from Shane Byrne to double the Northamptonshire side`s advantage.
Brackley`s reward is a home tie with National League outfit Barrow AFC on January 13th.
Better news for Braintree`s league rivals Weston-super-Mare, however, as they avoided an upset by winning 2-0 at The Meadow against Evo-Stik League South Premier side Chesham United in their original tie postponed from last Saturday.
The Seagulls will host another lower league side in Evo-Stik League Premier outfit Workington AFC in the Second Round after progressing, courtesy of goals from Danny Greenslade after 31 minutes, firing home from 18 yards, and then in stoppage time at the end of the game through top scorer Dayle Grubb.
The all-Evo-Stik League Premier replay between former winners Altrincham and Warrington Town went the way of the visiting Wire in dramatic fashion late on at the J Davidson Stadium.
This was the third meeting between the teams this season after two dour goalless draws at Cantilever Park.
Jordan Hulme eventually broke the deadlock in the 52nd minute when he turned and half-volleyed a shot past `keeper Tony McMillan following a John Johnston corner.
However, the visitors went all out for an equaliser late on which they scored in the 87th minute when Liam Goulding netted from close range.
The hosts had now lost the initiative and they conceded a second goal in the 3rd added minute when Jamie McDonald slid in to score at the back post.
Warrington now travel to National League side Ebbsfleet United in the next round on January 13th.
