Gulls Are Already Good Enough To Step Up Says Johnson

Gary Johnson feels his Torquay United side are already showing they can match what the National League has to offer.

They National League South Table toppers may have been defeated 3-1 after extra time at Boreham Wood.

But having seen two players be red carded the manager says the result wasn’t a fair reflection of where the club are currently at.

In fact, Johnson says should his side go on to win promotion that they haven’t got too much to be scared of.

“We lost the game because of the two sendings off,” the Gulls boss told Torquay’s official website.

“The eleven men were better than them, so if we can get ourselves at the next level, and Boreham Wood are 10th and doing OK, then we won’t need much at the end of the season to compete at this level.”

He added: “We tried to rest people but unfortunately it turned upside down, because we couldn’t take off the right people.

“We’ve got a few walking wounded at the minute, this wasn’t a game we anticipated but at least I know most of the boys will cope at this level.”

Torquay will hope to pull away at the top of the division and next Saturday they go back into battle with a trip to Hampton & Richmond.
