But the Minstermen boss is delighted with the squad he’s put together with the big kick-off two weeks away.
York drew 1-1 with a youthful Leeds United on Thursday night. That result came on the back of an impressive 1-0 win over Bradford City.
Gray says only fine-tuning is needed now and he thinks his side are nearly ready for the National League North curtain-raiser against Chorley on August 4.
“We’re always looking, you have to,” said the manager when quizzed about any more signings. “But competition for places is very good at the moment. We’ve very happy with the squad and you look at the bench and it’s already looking strong.
“We’ve still got work to do but what you see is some nice little partnerships starting to build and we’ve got to keep working on that. I’m happy with how we’re looking.”
The 1-1 draw with a talented Leeds side offered plenty of encouragement.
“We kept our discipline and we kept our shape,” Gray told York’s video splayer. “We created three or four fantastic chances.
“We didn’t get beat and that’s important - the hard-to-beat mentality is always crucial.”
