In the space of just a few hours on Sunday his Darlington departure and York appointment was confirmed, writes Tom Feaheny.
“It is simple, they are full-time with a nucleus of good hungry players, the aim is simple promotion, I can’t wait to train with the players everyday, improve them and I want to be in the Vanarama National League next season,” Gray said.
“It is a club with a tremendous fan base, the new stadium, the facilities, it will all be Football League ready, that is the ultimate aim, but we need to pick up wins first.”
When talking about the squad and possible additions, Gray made it clear, the recruitment process has already begun.
“The aim is to get three players in before the Brackley Town game, we have identified them and will be looking to get them in as soon as we can.
“I see a lot of good players here who can play in leagues higher, we just need to boost that quality by a percent or two.”
There are players currently on the transfer list but Gray says it is a fresh start for them now.
“It really is this simple, if they turn up work hard, chances will come for them, some players were told they could go by the old manager, I have made it clear right now they can stay i they impress me.”
When looking at his time as Darlington boss Gray said it was a great experience.
“I am so proud of that club, the memories I have will last with me forever, three promotions in five years is something I can look back on, that fan base deserves more success I hope it happens.”
