Gateshead Seek New Owners To Push Club Forward Next Year

By Steven Coney

Gateshead have a big summer ahead of them after owners Richard and Julie Bennett announced their intention to sell the club.

The pair have plowed millions into the Heed since replacing owner and chairman Graham Wood in 2015.

But they feel they’ve taken the club as far as they can. Under boss Steve Watson, Gateshead just missed out on a trip to Wembley in the FA Trophy whilst a mid-table finish in the National League has been secured.

The club will be hoping to push on next season and it looks like that will have to be achieved under new owners.

A statement from Richard Bennett read: “Following long and careful consideration, both Julie and I have decided to seek new owners for Gateshead Football Club.

“It has been a heart-wrenching decision, but having invested considerable time and money during the past three years, we feel that we have taken the club as far as we possibly can.

“We are leaving the club debt free and in a healthy position, which presents a fantastic opportunity for potential new owners or a consortium who share the same aspirations of securing a return to the Football League.

“It is our intention to seek new owners as soon as possible to ensure the club is in a position to sustain and compete at the highest level possible for next season.”
