After the Shots missed out on promotion via the play-offs due to being defeated by Tranmere Rovers in the semi-finals, the team have taken part in a training camp as well as their usual pre-season training and matches, writes Tom Feaheny.
Jake Gallagher told the club's website, he believes the added intensity has been required.
"Pre-season has been really intense, lots of games and lots of training, it has taken its toll on the players a little bit but I think we will see the rewards of it when it all gets underway.
"I think this season has been tougher than the last one, we had the trip to Bath which was good for team bonding, we have done a bit more because we needed it."
He added "This is what it is all about, we have worked hard for the August 5th, we need to be ready and with the work we have done that will be the case."
Gallagher has also been given more license to get forward, as he hopes to get a few more goals this season.
"The gaffer has always told me to get forward, I love scoring goals and the other midfielder can be a bit more holding which will give me more room to go."
