Friday`s Pre-Season Friendly Review...

By Steve Whitney

A round-up of Friday night`s pre-season games.

Vanarama National League South club Bath City came back from 4-1 down to draw 4-4 with National League side Torquay United at Plainmoor on Friday night.

The Romans went ahead after 18 minutes through George Rigg and looked the better side for much of the first period, only to go in behind at the interval following goals from Ben Gerring after 41 minutes and Dan Sparkes right on the stroke of half-time.

The Gulls improved noticeably after the break and went 4-1 up courtesy of Aman Verma on 53 minutes and Sam Chaney 10 minutes later.

However, Josh Hutchinson arrived just before the half-hour, scoring his first 4 minutes later.

He had a second within 3 minutes and then set up Nick McCootie for a 73rd minute leveller that City's overall performance deserved.

Torquay`s league rivals Woking were edged out 2-1 by League One AFC Wimbledon at the Laithwaite Community Stadium.

Tom Elliott powerfully headed the Dons into the lead from a Sean Kelly corner in the 6th minute.

Woking were deservedly back on level terms shortly before the break when James Shea failed to hold on to a Chike Kandi cross shot, which Charlie Penny put away at close range.

But Elliott restored the Dons` lead 3 minutes after half-time with a downward header from a Dannie Bulman cross.

Chester FC won 3-2 at Welsh Premier neighbours Airbus UK Broughton.

Chester dominated the opening half and led 2-0 at the break with goals from Kane Richards and a James Alabi penalty.

Airbus pulled a goal back at the start of the second half as triallist Fabio Bassangue fired home from just outside the box.

Shortly before the hour-mark the scores were level when Kevin Monteiro's shot was deflected by Blaine Hudson and looped over keeper Jon Worsnop.

The game looked to be headed for a draw but a poor clearance put the home defenders under pressure and Craig Mahon won the ball on the edge of the area before firing home the winner on 88 minutes.

National League new boys North Ferriby United were disappointing in only managing a draw at Toolstation Northern Counties East League side Cleethorpes Town.

The Villagers played poorly and, despite taking an early lead through James Speight, they had only two further attempts on goal throughout the 90 minutes.

Cleethorpes were often quicker to the ball and their passing was more accurate and a late equaliser from Adam Flett earned the hosts a deserved draw.

Last season`s National League runners-up Forest Green Rovers sent a youthful side to Evo-Stik League Southern Division One South & West outfit Shortwood United and suffered a 2-1 defeat at Meadowbank.

Two goals in a minute from Jake Lee was enough to see Shortwood overturn Liam Noble’s 31st minute opener, as academy manager Scott Bartlett led a side comprising mainly development players and the likes of Wade Elliott and Dutch triallist Dani Deelen.

National League North club Nuneaton Town stepped in at the last minute to help League One neighbours Coventry City, whose original game was cancelled late.

The game was less than 2 minutes old when the Sky Blues struck first, Ruben Lamerias sending a rasping drive into the back of the net

Nuneaton keeper Zeus De La Paz was beaten again just 4 minutes later, this time by Dion Kelly-Evans, who sent a looping header over the big custodian and into the back of the net.

The home side`s second half keeper, Dean Snedker, was beaten by Marcus Tudgay to make it 3-0.

Shaquille McDonald grabbed a consolation goal with a great finish.

Nuneaton`s league rivals Alfreton Town shared a 3-3 draw with Championship side Nottingham Forest.

Ryan Wilson gave the Reds a 7th minute lead at the Impact Arena.

Ben Brereton levelled from the spot after 15 minutes after he had been fouled by keeper Fabian Spiess when through on goal.

Paul Clayton gave Alfreton the lead after 42 minutes when he headed in a deflected cross from former Forest striker Craig Westcarr.

However, James Thorne drew the visitors level almost immediately with a long-range shot.

Forest`s new signing, former Arsenal and QPR defender Armand Traore, was credited with Alfreton's third goal after he seemingly got the final touch when challenging Paul Clayton for a header.
The lead did not last long though as another shot from distance, this time from midfielder Toby Edser made it 3-3.

Alfreton`s new league rivals, Altrincham, shared a 0-0 draw with a squad from Barclays Premier League newcomers Burnley at the J.Davidson Stadium.

National League South side Weston-super-Mare`s final pre-season friendly saw them run out 6-1 winners against Evo-Stik League Southern Division One South & West outfit Paulton Rovers.

Jake Mawford helped himself to four of the Seagulls` goals, with Jacob Cane and Jason Pope sandwiching the others, Mawford finishing off with an 88th minute spot-kick to make it 6-1.

Weston`s league rivals Margate were at Ryman Division One South neighbours Ramsgate for the second leg of the WW Martin Cup.

And Nikki Bull`s side eventually triumphed 7-6 on penalties after a 1-0 win, courtesy of Elliott Buchanan, made it 1-1 on aggregate.
