With Macclesfield Town out of action, the U’s knew a home win over struggling Chester would them back to the summit.
Sutton were made to work for their points, winning by the odd goal in five, but Doswell thought the scoreline didn’t paint a true picture.
“In the main, it was a fairly comfortable win despite the cheap penalty giving Chester hope at the end,” the U’s boss told SUFC TV.
“We weren’t necessarily at our best but that doesn’t matter at this point. There are only seven games to go and we’ll take it one at a time.
“We knew that a win would take us top. There is no nervousness from us about our position.”
The U’s travel to Maidenhead United on Good Friday before an Easter Monday derby against Bromley.
“It’ll be a tough game at Maidenhead on a difficult pitch and then we take on Bromley who have just got to the FA Trophy final,” Doswell added.
“It’s a bit of a local derby for us and by five o’clock on Monday, we’ll have a much clearer idea of what’s going to happen.”
