Four Things We Learned From The National League Weekend

By David Richardson

As the dust settles on another weekend of Vanarama National League action, we've picked the bones out of Saturday's matches.

John Still has got his Daggers firing again
After taking just five points from a possible 18, Dagenham & Redbridge have found their mojo again. The National League's top scorers netted just three times during that run and if there were any doubts they wouldn't find their deadly touch in front of goal, Saturday provided the answer. Still's side bagged four in a fine second half display to sink lowly Chester. It was the Daggers third successive National League win, lifting them up to fourth and two points off leaders Sutton United.

The Shots are firing too!
Aldershot Town have an identical record to Dagenham, having won their last three, suffering defeat and then drawing. Their latest victory was the biggest of their season albeit not by scoreline. Gary Waddock saw his team put two past the National League's best defence in Wrexham, who were sat top before play. Waddock described their performance as the best of the season and knows that if they win tomorrow night at Bromley, they will move top of the division on goal difference.

Boreham Wood have play-off material
Looking through the Wood's squad, it's no surprise to see that they have broken into the play-off places. Luke Garrard has assembled an experienced side with plenty of pace and versatility. Their 2-1 home win over Woking on Saturday - one of the National League's featured games - may seem close from the scoreline but Boreham were far better than their opponents, who themselves have had a great first-half to the season.

Garrard's squad is littered with no-how with centre-backs David Stephens, Jamie Turley and Dean Wells, through midfield with Mark Ricketts, Tom Champion and Keiran Murtagh and forwards Bruno Andrade, Dan Holman and Blair Turgott, who are a nightmare combination for any defence. The Wood are 10 games unbeaten in the division and that run doesn't look like ending soon.

There's signs of life at Torquay
After Gary Owers admitted to telling his side a few 'home truths' following their 2-0 defeat at AFC Fylde a week ago, a revival has started. Last Tuesday the Gulls won at Sutton to end their nine-game unbeaten run. On Saturday they won again, convincingly beating struggling Leyton Orient 3-0 at their Plainmoor home. They're four points adrift of safety and the sooner they can get out of the bottom four, the better says Owers: "I’ve said to the players, let’s try and get out of trouble now. We don’t want to be going into spring in this position and the season from December to April always seem to go very quickly.”
