Four Things To Look Out For In The National League This Weekend

By David Richardson

Who knows what will happen in the Vanarama National League this Saturday but we've picked out five things to keep an eye on as the drama unfolds.

The title race
Dover Athletic were joined by Wrexham at the top of the table on Wednesday night and have the chance to become the outright leaders again with a win at Eastleigh. Sutton United could join them if they win at Solihull Moors while Macclesfield Town, in third, could reclaim top spot if they can get three points at Barrow and Dover fail to win. Wrexham aren't in action after beating rivals Chester on Wednesday night.

Hartlepool's improving form
They were suffering a relegation hangover in the early stages of the season but now Hartlepool are finding their feet in the National League under manager Craig Harrison. They're unbeaten in their last six, losing just once in their previous 12 matches. That form has helped lift them to 12th, just three points behind fourth-placed Sutton.

Rhys Oates has scored three in the last four games while Jonathan Franks has also chipped in with six goals this season. Pools head to a Boreham Wood on Saturday, who they are level on points with but are tenth.

The battlers at the bottom
It's never easy fighting at the wrong end of the league table and this weekend looks just a little bit harder for those teams. Rock-bottom Solihull Moors host a Sutton side going very well under Paul Doswell. They've lost just twice away from home this season. Torquay United, just above Moors, are also at home and they will be visited by fifth-placed Maidstone United.

Chester aren't playing having lost to Wrexham in mid-week so next up in the relegation places is Barrow at home to a Macclesfield side, who have won four of their last six and sit third. Resurgent Guiseley, a point above the drop, host seventh-placed Bromley, another team that has gatecrashed the top 10. While these fixtures are undoubtedly tough for the National League's strugglers, they'll take hope with being at home and knowing how unpredictable this season has been so far.

Can the O's shine on TV?
There might not be a better time for Leyton Orient to start putting things right than live on BT Sport this Saturday when they head to Ebbsfleet United. Steve Davis' side haven't won in the National League since September 2nd, ten games ago, and are just three points above the relegation zone. They'll be without eight-goal striker Macauley Bonne on Saturday evening, who is away on international duty with Zimbabwe.
