The 32-year-old brings a wealth of experience to the Magpies midfield.
After starting out in the youth teams at Hibernian, Black moved south of the border to sign professional terms with Blackburn Rovers in 2003.
But he left Ewood Park without managing a senior appearance and joined Inverness Caledonian Thistle, where he spent five years, making 132 appearances and scoring 8 goals.
That earned him a move to his boyhood heroes Heart of Midlothian in the summer of 2009.
He played eighty-seven games for Hearts, scoring 5 times and then moves to Glasgow Rangers in July 2012.
Eighty-three games and 5 goals later, Black returned south to have a two-year spell with Shrewsbury Town, playing fifty matches, and then finished the 2016/17 season with Blackpool before being released last summer.
He recently signed for Evo-Stik League North outfit Skelmersdale United.
Black also has one international cap to his name, having represented Scotland in their fixture against Australia back in 2012, having also earned two `B` caps.
