Flowers was Mark Yates’ assistant last year and between them they masterminded Moors’ survival. Yates has since taken on a new challenge with Macclesfield in League Two, and for Flowers, moving into the hot seat is a natural transition.
“It feels great,” he told the club’s official website. “I was interviewed for the job previously with Mark [Yates] and the board suggested we came in together.
“The hard thing to do will be to replicate last season but hopefully we can improve on the good work we’ve started.”
Last season was one of ups and downs for Moors fans but with
Flowers staying on and the club naming Gary Whild - who also played a part in last season’s survival – as his assistant, this season looks to be one with more consistency.
The new boss said: I’ve known Gary a long time. I’ve worked with him a couple of times at Kidderminster. We’ve always been in touch.
“I don’t think much is going to change. The style of play won’t change a lot.”
Flowers and Whild both came in last season at the same time as Yates and by that time the club’s sole aim was to survive.
Flowers admitted the National League would be more difficult this season, but the club would still be looking to improve on their work last campaign.
“We want to improve on what we did last season,” he said.
“This club’s got ambition, make no mistake about it. The board have a plan but it’s over a period of time so we have to improve this year.
“Next season will be an incredibly tough division when you look at who’s come down from League Two and who’s come up. They mean business.”
Recruitment was integral to the turnaround in fortunes last season and the club have managed to retain a number of their key players. Flowers also hinted there could be a chance for some of the club’s younger players to flourish this time around.
He said: “We’ve kept a core of what we had last year.
“Next season we’ve got an under 23s side so now there is a clear pathway into the first team for the younger players.
“One or two have come through in the past and performed, and there’s one or two more in the system.”
