Fleet Stood Up To Strong Sutton

High-flyers Sutton United were held at Gander Green Lane by Fleet, determined to match-up to Paul Doswell’s side this time.

They more than did that, earning a point in a 0-0 stalemate, making it the 15th time they’ve avoided defeat in the National League this season from 18 games.

Whether McMahon’s side can start turning draws into wins, having notched ten of them, is the big question but for now, coming through tests like this is enough to please the former midfielder.

“If I’m being brutally honest, we played Sutton two years ago in my first year in charge, in pre-season as well, we got bullied both times,” he said.

“We didn’t today. I thought they were probably a little bit surprised how we set up and how we went about our business. We were big, we were strong and you have to be in this division. Very committed performance, much what we asked for.

“[Sutton] are a good side and they’ve been for many years now, especially the last two or three. They’re difficult to play against on a 3G pitch but I thought we dealt with it really well.”
