Fleet, Barrow & Weston Suffer Trophy Replay Upsets

By Steve Whitney

Various cup competitions are littered with examples over the years of teams from lower divisions holding higher level opponents on their own ground, only to lose the home replay.

However, Tuesday night saw both Warrington Town and Workington AFC from the Evo-Stik League Premier complete Buildbase FA Trophy upsets by ousting Ebbsfleet United and Weston-super-Mare respectively from the competition.

Warrington did superbly to hold Vanarama National League Fleet at Stonebridge Road last Saturday to set up the replay at Cantilever Park and the Wire, who have enjoyed success in the Emirates FA Cup in recent seasons, won 2-0.

Tony Gray opened the scoring on 51 minutes with a strike from 20 yards after taking Jamie McDonald’s pass.

And the experienced front man had a hand in the second goal on 67 minutes when his fine run set up Will Hayhurst to shoot with his effort parried straight to McDonald, who netted from close range.

Warrington will now travel to another former winner in Wealdstone in the Third Round on February 3rd.

Setting up a home tie with Fleet`s league rivals Bromley are Workington, who edged out National League South side Weston 2-1 at Borough Park.

In front of a crowd of 576, Weston made the long journey north after being held at the Woodspring Stadium last weekend and fell behind after 32 minutes when Josh Calvert put the Reds in front when he fired home following a half-cleared corner.

But the Seagulls were level 9 minutes into the second half when Naby Diallo received the ball on the edge of the box and fired into the corner of the net.

The Reds came close to a second midway through the half when a Calvert header from the corner rattled the crossbar and rebounded out.

But shortly after that, Weston suffered a massive blow when they had Ashley Harper dismissed for a second yellow card offence when tripping Phil McLuckie.

And it was McLuckie who bagged the Reds` winner in the 70th minute when he headed Conor Tinnion's cross into the back of the net.

National League North side Brackley Town also made the long trek to Cumbria for their replay with National League outfit Barrow AFC following last weekend`s goalless draw at St James`s Park.

And they too completed an upset by ousting the 2010 winners at the Furness Building Society Stadium.

Five minutes before the break, Aaron Williams – recently re-signed from Newport County - beat the offside trap and held off a couple of challenges to slide the ball past Joel Dixon and give the Northamptonshire side the lead.

James Armson made it 2-0 on 62 minutes as he tapped in from close range following a Glenn Walker effort that was turned onto the post by Dixon.

In the all-National League replay, Gateshead booked their spot in the next round with a 2-1 win over Boreham Wood.

Recent recruit Joe Quigley put Wood ahead in the first half, with his first goal since joining the club on loan from AFC Bournemouth.

The visitors pulled it back level in the 69th minute, following a 20-yard strike from Paddy McLaughlin.

The first strike gave the Heed the impetus to push on, and they netted the winner with just 15 minutes to go through Luke Hannant.

In an all-National League North replay, Stockport County maintained hopes of a Wembley visit with a comfortable 3-0 win against 1987 winners Kidderminster Harriers at Edgeley Park.

Rhys Turner opened the scoring for County after 25 minutes, the on-loan player unleashing a fine drive past Brandon Hall.

Ben McKenna eventually extended the lead on 73 minutes with a goal on his birthday!

And a last-minute Bohan Dixon penalty after Darren Stephenson was tripped in the box, secured the Hatters triumph to give them a trip to National League Maidenhead United in the next round.

Stockport`s league rivals Harrogate Town were 5-0 winners over National League South side St Albans City at the CNG Stadium in the evening`s other replay.

Warren Burrell headed home a Joe Leesley free-kick after 12 minutes to give Harrogate the lead.

However, it wasn`t until the 64th minutes that Dominic Knowles doubled Harrogate`s lead with a neat finish.

Then on 72 minutes Burrell got the final touch on Josh Falkingham’s low shot to net his second and make it 3-0, before Leesley fired home 2 minutes later after Knowles had been dispossessed when through on goal.

The final goal arrived with almost the final kick of the game as George Thomson converted at the far post.

Harrogate now face Bostik League Premier high-flyers Billericay Town in the next round.
