Five Things You May Have Missed In The National League

By Steven Coney

It was a dramatic last Tuesday evening in the National League season and one thing’s for sure, we’re in for a big final day!

We had important fixtures in our play-off races and relegation battles and every single point matters at this stage.

It’s impossible to keep your eyes on all of the action so we’ve picked out five things you may have missed…

Solihull Moors complete their great escape

When Mark Yates took charge of Solihull in mid-November, their future looked very bleak. Bottom of the table with just 11 points from 19 games, the Moors were struggling. It took time but Yates has masterminded a fantastic turnaround in the West Midlands. A run of four wins in five games - capped off by Tuesday’s win at Tranmere - has secured their status for next season. Yates deserves all the credit coming his way.

Could Ebbsfleet be the team to beat in the play-offs?

Tranmere Rovers will be a lot of people’s favourites and rightly so. But Ebbsfleet United are starting to show exactly why they’ll be feared if they do secure their place in the top seven. The 5-2 win at Gateshead on Tuesday night pushed them up to fifth place. They have a good mix of experience and youth, score goals and are very mean at the back - the perfect mix.

It’s going to be a very long summer at Torquay…

Some will say Tuesday’s defeat to Guiseley doesn’t mean much. Both clubs were relegated before the game but it perhaps sums up the Gulls’ season. They have not been good enough and despite a late-season rally, another great escape couldn’t be achieved. Things need to change at Plainmoor but next season will not be easy in the National League South. Boss Gary Owers has hinted at major changes and he will be a busy man over the next few months.

It’s advantage Barrow in the relegation fight

They rode their luck at times but the 0-0 draw at play-off chasing Bromley has given Barrow a one-point advantage ahead of Saturday. The last relegation place will go to either the Bluebirds or Woking. Barrow host relegated Chester and will expect to get the three points. All Woking can do is try and beat Dover Athletic and hope Chester do them a favour. Barrow will be big favourites.

Saturday is going to be a dramatic final day across the National League!

As well as the National League relegation fight going to Saturday, the same can be said for the National League South. Hungerford Town have a point advantage over Poole Town and whoever holds their nerve will avoid the drop to Step 3. The South’s title will also be decided and the play-off races in all three divisions are far from clear. So buckle up, it’s going to be a long 90 minutes for some!
