It was another enthralling weekend of big results, big goals and big talking points up and down our three divisions.
There was plenty to keep your eye on so here are five things you may have missed around the Vanarama National League…
Yet more twists and turns in the title race!
Both leaders Macclesfield Town and second-placed Sutton United lost on the road and that means it’s as you were at the very top. Tranmere Rovers missed out and failed to capitalise on that with defeat to Boreham Wood who have subsequently moved up to third. Wrexham and Aldershot could also only pick up a point so there were more questions than answers after Saturday’s action.
And the play-off race is heating up as well
Dover overcame Macclesfield to strengthen their play-off position and their closest rivals AFC Fylde lost ground with a disappointing home draw against Hartlepool United. Dover are suddenly only two points off third place and any of clubs currently in the play-off places could potentially slip out of the top seven if they’re not careful.
Barrow give themselves a huge boost in the relegation dogfight
The battle at the bottom of the table looks like it will go down to the wire. Barrow’s outlook is looking much rosier after their win at Maidenhead United and it would be no surprise to see them climb away from trouble now. Hartlepool’s late point at Fylde sees them remain three points clear of the bottom four whilst third-bottom and fourth-bottom clubs Torquay and Solihull drew 1-1 against each other - not ideal for either side.
Salford are back on top in the National League North
Just when you thought Harrogate may go on and stamp their authority on the title race, they slip up at struggling Tamworth. Their point in the West Midlands allowed Salford to reclaim top spot but the Ammies had to do things the hard way! They needed a second-half comeback to beat Spennymoor Town and now they have a two-point advantage.
It was a day of late drama in the South promotion race
Havant & Waterlooville remain at the summit but with ten minutes to go on Saturday, it looked as if their lead would be extended to five points. The Hawks drew 0-0 with fellow high-fliers Hampton & Richmond and Dartford were trailing at home to Hemel Hempstead. The Darts, however, dug deep and goals from Andy Pugh and Alfie Pavey secured a massive three points. The gap at the top is down to just two points!
