Five Things We Learned From The National League Weekend

By Steven Coney

It may have been a disrupted weekend of Vanarama National League action because of the snow but there was still plenty of drama.

We saw some impressive results across our divisions and we’ve picked out the top five things to take away from another action-packed weekend.

It’s Better To Be Lucky Than Good…

Scott McManus’ goal secured a priceless victory for FC Halifax Town at Aldershot Town on Saturday - the Shaymen’s first victory in 12 matches. Boss Billy Heath held his hands up following the game and admitted his side had been lucky down in Hampshire. It may have been a fortunate result but it could be the turning point Halifax desperately needed.

Rovers Beginning To Motor

Slowly but surely, Tranmere are beginning to get going and that can only be bad news for the rest of the National League. You would expect Rovers to beat Torquay at home - which they did 3-0 on Saturday - but the Gulls have been a tough nut to crack recently. With players returning from suspension and injury, boss Micky Mellon will no doubt be looking forward to a few more results like Saturday’s.

Macclesfield Are Here To Stay

Arguably the biggest statement of the weekend, the Silkmen showed their quality by seeing off Wrexham 4-1 live on BT Sport. Striker Scott Wilson netted a hat-trick as the Dragons’ stingy defence was breached with relative ease. Macc’s small squad could end up being an issue but if they continue in this vein of form, they’ll be tough to stop.

Jason Oswell Is The Real Deal

Disappointed with his performance in Stockport County’s defeat at Brackley last weekend, Oswell was determined to bounce back. It’s safe to say he did! Oswell claimed his second hat-trick of the season on Saturday to take him to 18 National League North goals so far this season. County beat Spennymoor Town 3-2 and are now just two points off the top seven.

Hampton & Richmond Are Unstoppable

Saturday’s 5-1 thumping of East Thurrock United was Hampton’s eighth successive victory in the National League South and tenth in all competitions. The Beavers are now up to third in the table and are only behind Dartford and Braintree Town on goal difference. In a division that seems to be there for the taking, Hampton & Richmond are making waves.
