Fifth Successive Win Lifts Jim Gannon's Stockport Into Fifth

By Steve Whitney

Stockport County and Tamworth met in the Vanarama National League North on Tuesday night at Edgeley Park in a game which had been postponed 24 hours earlier.

And whilst the still good crowd of 2,854 was no doubt smaller than it might have been had it been played on Bank Holiday Monday, they did see the Hatters win for the fifth successive time in the league.

And their 3-1 win lifted them up to fifth in the table, six points clear of Blyth Spartans, who occupy eighth place.

But Jim Gannon`s side had to come back from a goal down to a relegation-threatened Lambs when good work from former Stockport man Aman Verma ended with Jed Davies firing past Ben Hinchcliffe from the edge of the area after 20 minutes.

County responded well though and were level within 8 minutes when Jason Oswell netted a Rhys Turner cross from close range.

And 4 minutes later, the hosts were in front when another Turner assist saw Matty Warburton curl past Jack Stevens from just inside the box.

Stockport had dominated possession during the early part of the second half and increased their lead in the 58th minute when Oswell headed home one of a string of corners.

The Lambs had threatened little in the second half but made it a more nervy finale than it perhaps should have been when they reduced the deficit to just one in the 86th minute when Dior Angus tucked the ball home following a long throw.
