FC United Maintain Good Run With Sunday Victory

By Steve Whitney

In front of a Sunday afternoon crowd of 2,863, FC United of Manchester moved up to thirteenth in the Vanarama National League North table following a 1-0 win against Southport at Broadhurst Park.

FC United went close to opening the scoring in the 7th minute when they were awarded a corner following a shot by Steve Irwin, and from the set-piece, player boss Tom Greaves hit the post.

But in the 12th minute, the manager wasn`t to be denied a second time and the December manager of the month slotted the ball past Port `keeper Jon Worsnop after a fine through ball from Joel Senior.

Then on 32 minutes, Sam Baird headed over the bar as the hosts looked to increase their lead.

Little was seen of the visitors as an attacking force in the first half, but they came very close to equalising 11 minutes into the second half, but a great strike from David Morgan produced a good save from FC United`s keeper Lloyd Allinson.

On 66 minutes, Morgan hit another good strike that Allinson saved, then at the other end, Senior had Worsnop scrambling to prevent a second goal.

Seven minutes from time, Worsnop again came to Port`s rescue when, from a Senior cross, a header from sub Jamal Crawford brought a terrific save.

But it finished 1-0 and lifts the Red Rebels seven points above the drop zone, but leaves Kevin Davies` side just a point above the bottom three.
