Fathers And Sons To Play In The National League

By Tom Scott

As it's Father's Day on Sunday, we're taking a look at some of the sons who have followed in their father's footsteps to play in the National League.

Tommy Widdrington & Theo Widdrington
Theo Widdrington is the latest addition to the list when he joined dad Tommy at Aldershot Town last season - joining from King's Lynn where the pair also worked together.

Tommy's career as a player in the National League was fairly short - making just two appearances with Salisbury in 2009/10.

Chris Hargreaves & Cameron Hargreaves
Chris Hargreaves' National League career was short but brought about huge success as he gained promotion to the EFL in successive seasons.

After joining Torquay United in 2008, Hargreaves captained Torquay United to EFL promotion at the first attempt. The following season, he won promotion again with Oxford United.

His son, Cameron, is currently at King's Lynn Town having also made appearances for Hungerford and Chippenham in the past.

Danny Kedwell & Harvey Kedwell
There's no two ways about it, Harvey Kedwell has some big shoes to fill following dad Danny's stellar career in the National League spanning 15 years.

Harvey made 17 appearances for Dagenham & Redbridge last season on loan from Charlton Athletic.

His dad was somewhat of a legend, winning promotions with AFC Wimbledon and Ebbsfleet United during his career. He also had spells as Welling, Grays and Havant & Waterlooville. He notched 178 goals over his time in the National League.

Frank Sinclair & Tyrese Sinclair
Frank Sinclair made 57 appearances for Wrexham in the National League between 2009 and 2011 before turning out Colwyn Bay and then Brackley Town in a five-year stint the National League North.

His son Tyrese has a bright future, impressing for Rochdale and Altrincham last season before bagging a move to fancied York City last month.

Paul Edwards & Devonte Redmond
Paul Edwards played for a number of National League sides including Fleetwood, Mansfield and Barrow - where he won the FA Trophy in 2010.

Devonte Redmond helped Salford City gain promotion to the EFL in 2019 before dropping back into the National League with Wrexham.

He also made a loan move to Kidderminster Harriers in 2022.

Richie Wellens & Charlie Wellens
Richie Wellens made a handful of appearances for Salford City in the National League North before making two more at Macclesfield Town.

Son Charlie made six appearances for Oldham Athletic during the 2022/23 season - scoring once.

Dale Belford & Tyrell Belford/Cam Belford
Dale Belford may only have played one minute for Tamworth in the National League in 2011 but he left a legacy in more ways than one.

Cam made 46 National League appearances for Tamworth and also appeared for Wrexham. He later played for Chorley and Nuneaton in the 2018/19 season.

Tyrell turned out for Southport in 2016/17 and also made 21 appearances for Nuneaton between 2016 and 2019.
