Fascinating Opening Day Encounters

By Steve Whitney

The opening games in the National League on Saturday, August 6th sees some fascinating encounters.

Sutton United, returning to the top of the non-League Pyramid as National League South winners, host fellow newcomers, Solihull Moors, who won the northern section.

Another interesting opening day pairing sees York City, relegated from League Two along with Dagenham & Redbridge, begin their second spell in the competition on the newly re-laid 3G at the Gallagher Stadium against Maidstone United, who came up from the National League South via the play-offs.

The Daggers` return to the league sees them hosting much-changed Southport, now under the leadership of player boss Andy Bishop.

North Ferriby United, the 2015/16 National League North play-off winners, start off at home to a Braintree Town side under Jamie Day`s new management, while the Iron`s former boss, Danny Cowley, takes his new Lincoln City side to Kingfield to take on Woking on the opening Saturday.

Darlington 1883 begin life in the National League North with an opening day trip to Moss Lane to take on an Altrincham side keen to start well in their efforts to make a swift return to the top flight.

There is sure to be a big crowd to see the team who came up with the Quakers from the Evo-Stik Northern Premier League, Salford City, entertain Gloucester City at Moor Lane.

FA Trophy holders FC Halifax Town, who came down with Altrincham, travel to fancied Nuneaton Town on the opening day, while the other side keen to make a rapid return to the top division, Kidderminster Harriers, are also away on Tameside to play Curzon Ashton.

Welling United, the fourth side to suffer the drop at the end of last season, start life in the National League South with a visit to Marsh Farm and Oxford City.

Three of the promoted teams have to start off with away fixtures, with Evo-Stik League Southern Premier Division champions Poole Town visiting much-fancied Ebbsfleet United, Hungerford Town, who came up with the Dolphins, go to Essex to play the Ryman League play-off winners, East Thurrock United, while the team who won the Ryman League, Hampton & Richmond Borough, make the journey over to the ProKit UK Stadium to take on a Bishop`s Stortford side who lost manager Rod Stringer to rivals Chelmsford City and replaced him with Gordon Boateng.
