Fan Power! Clubs' Supporters Really Show Their Worth

By Sam Elliott

There may not be any football at the moment but fans are continuing to show their support when it really matters.

As the coronavirus keeps everyone inside, fans have been using their finger tips to back their clubs and communities.

Notts County’s supporters have raised nearly £10,000 inside just two days.

As part of a crowdfunding scheme, they have been collecting online for their club and for Age UK.

The overall target is £20,000 before May - and they have made a flying start!

The Magpies have been making contact with elderly supporters, nominated by those closest to them.

Speaking on the experience, Notts' boss Neal Ardley told Notts TV: "For me it's been really enriching.

"There has been some tough ones in there- one or two who have just lost loved ones- and you come away very emotionally involved.

"At a time like this where we're all suffering, being able to do something good and positive to help makes you feel better about yourself".

Torquay United manager Gary Johnson got an offer he wasn’t expecting as he called up some of the club’s older supporters.

The Gulls boss was checking on the fans during a very difficult time and was taken aback by what one elderly supporter said.

“It was a real lump in the throat moment,” Johnson said on talkSPORT after being invited onto the Sports Breakfast Show.

“We’ve been ringing round the mature supporters who are season ticket holders.

“We’ve had ten people a day to call for the last couple of weeks, which has been humbling as well as taxing.

“With one particular chap, I said: ‘Hi, it’s Gary Johnson from the football club’.

“And he said: ‘Gary! I’ve been thinking about it and I’ve got my life savings – I’ve got a couple of hundred pounds in the bank – and if you need that, it’s there for you.”

“I was like: ‘No, no… it’s not that type of call! We are just asking how you are and have you got help and that’.

“And he said: ‘But it is there mate, if you want it’.

“I told him we really appreciate it, but we don’t need it just yet; ‘don’t worry about that and look after yourself.’

"That was unbelievable,” the former Cheltenham Town title winning boss said.
