Ex-Star Evatt Expects Chesterfield To Be Right Up There

Ian Evatt expects Chesterfield to be a threat under the stewardship of Martin Allen.

The experienced defender took over at the club for the final few matches of last season following their relegation.

He came in too late to save the Spireites but says that experience convinced him that management was the right path to go down.

Evatt played nearly 150 times in five years for Chesterfield and was a firm favourite with the supporters.

He says he can’t wait to return to the Proact in January and see some old friends.

The 36-year-old told us: “Chesterfield are a fantastic club. I had a lot of great memories, it’s just gutting that they slipped out of the EFL.

“It’s a big club. You just need to look at the stadium and the support to see that.

“It was difficult at the end of last season, it was hard to take for everyone involved. It wasn’t nice to watch and now it’s about them rebuilding.

“But the club are in good hands now. Martin Allen is the type of character who can lift a place. He’s got what the club need.

“I expect them to be up there at the right end. It’s not easy once you drop out of League Two but the noises are positive.”

Evatt says he has a big challenge in front of him at Barrow and getting the fans inside quickly is his number one goal.

The Bluebirds begin at home to Havant & Waterlooville on August 4.
