Lovely Glove-ly! Yeovil Champions After Night Of Glory

By Sam Elliott

It was glory for the Glovers as Yeovil Town completed the trio of champions after clinching the Vanarama National League South this evening.

Mark Cooper’s long-time leaders have returned less than a year after relegation following tonight’s 2-0 win over Truro City.

Their 27th victory of a season to remember came in front of over 1,200 travelling fans and the win means they cannot be caught after goals from Rhys Murphy and Alex Fisher - it is their first title since 2005.

But who will they be playing next season? It is unlikely to be Dorking Wanderers who edge closer to the drop after blowing a 2-0 lead to lose at relegation rivals Wealdstone. Max Kretzschmar was the hero with the Stones’ game-changing double to give them a much needed win.

Gateshead suffered a play-off set back at now safe AFC Fylde. Ethan Mitchell was in the right place 15 minutes from time before Jon Ustabasi doubled up in the closing stages.

Banbury United are relegated from the National League North despite a brave effort at Spennymoor Town, who were up and running once Will Harris opened the scoring. They eventually won 5-2 with Rob Ramshaw and Glen Taylor both scoring twice.

In the National League South, Slough Town eased to a 4-0 win over Taunton Town - Nathan Minhas was at the double against the ten men. A stunning Trae Cook Appiah over-head kick added the gloss.

Joe Haigh had a great day - he got another key goal for Farnborough to take them into the play-offs hours after being named the division’s Player of the Month.
