Eastbourne Borough In Shock After Death Of CEO

Following several months of poor health, and only last week a diagnosis of cancer, Mike Spooner passed away on Sunday evening 18th February.

Mike had been involved with the club for 26 years – most recently as CEO – a role he only stood down from last week.

Everyone`s immediate thoughts and condolences go to his partner Sam and his daughter Abbie, as well as to other members of his family.

For 26 years until stepping down last week, Mike was CEO of Langney Sports and Eastbourne Borough Football Club. That slightly pompous title utterly belied the unfussy, grounded and humble man that Mike Spooner was.

A statement from the club read: “We have this week lost a wonderful and tireless administrator, a wise counsellor, a man of integrity, energy, dedication and humour. We have lost a pillar of our football club, and a man without whose foresight and commitment this club would simply not be where it is today. And we have lost a dear friend.

“Many tributes were made to Mike last week, on his retirement as CEO and we know that in the coming days, there will be a flood of further tributes and memories. For the moment, we are united in sorrow”.
