Dowson Knows It's Never Too Early To Be Playing Football!

Alan Dowson says it’s never too early to be playing football as he gets ready to take his first game as Woking manager on Saturday.

It’s not even July and the Cards are back in action as they play Fleet Town in their pre-season curtain raiser.

Whilst most teams will spend their Saturdays running, Dowson wanted to get down to business as soon as possible and says it’s the right thing to do to be pulling on th kit this weekend.

He told Woking’s David Holmes that he’s relieved his players have been taking the summer break more seriously than he did as a player.

“Training has been good, it’s been physical which is what I like to do,” he said. “There’s no point running them into the ground and when it comes to the football they can’t control a rat!

“When I was playing you used to sink 25 pints a night and eat burgers and chips - pre-season was when you got yourself fit. That’s all changed now. They look after themselves, you don’t have to get them into shape.

“We have got to play competitive games quickly, that’s why we’re starting this weekend.

“It’s early but it’s the right thing to do. We want to get out there and start building and getting our shape together.”

On the transfer front he teased some news for supporters.

“We want to add one or two more,” Dowson added. “We’ve had a bid for a player which has been accepted, so we hope to do that deal on Tuesday.”
