Down But Not Out, Cards "Gave It All That They Had"

By Sam Elliott

Jason Goodliffe believes supporters can rest safe in the knowledge that his Woking players did everything in their power to beat the drop.

The Cards were relegated into the National League South on Saturday as Dover Athletic walked away with a 2-1 win, ultimately not enough to take them into the play-offs.

But Woking’s heartbreak was far greater. They return to Step 2 after a six year stay was ended in front of the BT Sport cameras. Watch Match Highlights Here.

They were in the bottom four for only a fortnight - going down despite Barrow’s 2-1 home defeat to Chester.

As it happens, victory would have kept them up but their coffin was nailed by Keanu Marsh-Brown in the last few minutes and it was the end of the road on a day of disappointment all round in Surrey.

But Goodliffe knows he players did everything possible to remain in the National League.

“I can’t fault them, not one bit,” said the caretaker on what he said was a “horrible, horrible afternoon” for the club..

“The players were absolutely fantastic. The fans can at least go away knowing they gave it all they had. We couldn’t have done any more.

“I’m gutted for everyone. We’ve not been in the relegation places for long at all but as they say, you can’t argue with the table at the end of the season.

“I had a feeling Barrow would drop points but we couldn’t quite keep our end of the bargain. We tried, but we couldn’t do it.

“We’ve not gone down because of this result, we’ve gone down because of we’ve got quite had enough in the games before it.”
