Down And Out, Now Bignot Says Chester Need New Life

Chester became the first team to fall in the National League - and their manager says the club’s fans now need fresh hope for the future.

Saturday’s 2-0 home defeat to Tranmere Rovers saw the Blues relegation into the second tier.

Marcus Bignot has already been told he won’t be in charge next season but that didn’t stop him “hurting” at the full-time whistle.

Chester are second from bottom but are the first club to go down because 24th place Guiseley still have a game in hand.

Bignot said: “It’s a sad day for the club, but many clubs have experienced relegation and bounced back - now the important thing is how it bounces back.

“I’m really gutted for the supporters and the volunteers. We’ve not been good enough, but since the news broke of the problems three months ago we have lost so much.

“Relegation has been inevitable for a while, but it hurts. It’s hard for everyone and everyone feels the pain.”

Next comes an important close season as the Blues prepare for what’s ahead of them.

Bignot, who won the Conference North with Solihull three years ago, knows it will be a huge challenge.

“The club needs to answer questions and the supporters need the answers,” the manager said.

“I’m frustrated as I’m sure everyone is. Going into the National League North doesn’t solve the problems, believe me.

“My outcome has been decided, they don’t want me to be the manager and I accept that. But they need someone with experience to take the club forward.”
