Dedicated Trio Earn Some Much Deserved Extra Recognition

By Sam Elliott

We always take great pleasure in announcing the Vanarama Volunteer Of the Month awards and this time is certainly no different.

Thanks to our title sponsors, we have been able to honour the great at the good of the game for years.

Giving deserved recognition to those who give up their time just for the love of their club, we’re thrilled to be able to bring their stories to life.

We all know the importance of getting children involved in the game from an early age.

At Torquay United, Steve Elswood makes sure the young visitors to Plainmoor get a day they will never forget.

As the mascot coordinator, he relishes making the boys’ and girls’ experience special and has introduced a number of initiatives to keep them busy at half-time.

Taking part in a penalty shoot-out against members of their Women’s’ team, they’re kept warm and entertained.

The Gulls say he is a valuable member of their volunteer army and has also assisted on matchdays as co-commentator for the club’s radio commentary.

It’s fair to say clubs couldn’t operate without proper medical care.

Getting injured players back on the pitch as quickly as possible is also vital, especially if you’re chasing promotion.

Abby Gosling is crucial to King’s Lynn Town as the sports therapist intern takes her first steps in her career.

She has been assisting within the medical team for a number of months and the club tell us the extra pair of hands has been invaluable.

Her desire to learn and enthusiasm to help is a credit to her and often she often travels many miles off her own back to get to the games.

The learning process is certainly made more exciting with the club flying high in the National League North.

Our National League South winner has just celebrated a big birthday - but there’s no sign of her slowing down just yet!

Nominated by new Slough Town manager Scott Davies, he tells us that Jean Lightfoot is simply an “absolute diamond”.

Calling the players ‘hey boys’ it’s one big family at the Rebels, which was proven without doubt when the team, staff and fans all turned up for her 75th birthday on February 4.
It’s never been a more fitting month for her to get some recognition.

Over the past few years always-jolly Jean has had her health struggles but is back in a good place - and back to doing what she does best.

Scott tells us the front of house star at Arbour Park is much more than that to so many.

Everyone is raising another glass to the iconic smiling Slough Town super fan!

Well done to our deserving trio of volunteers!
