He may have a record to match the very best when it comes to guiding clubs into the promotion places, but just staying in the division was the only thing on his mind back in October.
Yet after the first game of 2020, the Kent club find themselves sitting in seventh.
Four wins from five and doing the double over rivals Welling may have the manager eating his words!
“We’re in there but I guess it’s a bit false,” King told DFCTV after the fine 4-0 New Year’s Day win.
“When I say false, we’ve played around us have played 24 - some of the team have played 21, some 22.
“I don’t really look at that yet. It will be nice to see where we are after we play Dorking on Saturday.
“I set my own targets in my mind. Can we get seven out of nine points? We managed to get nine, and that’s fantastic.”
King is delighted with the stylish performances being put in.
“It was a fantastic first half performance, as good as it has been since I have been here,” he said.
“The movement was fantastic. They are all comfortable on the ball now.
“We have installed that, and also signed players who want the ball - there’s no hiding place in this team now.
“Yes there are things we need to work on, and players need to work on, but we are full of confidence now.”
