Could We Have A BT Sport Classic In Store On Saturday?

By Sam Elliott

In a season that’s pretty much had it all already, BT Sport are serving up something pretty special on Saturday.

Not only are two National League giants going to war as Chesterfield travel to Hartlepool United.

But you can’t really be content that it’s title chaser against play-off hunter, either.

Especially when it’s the side with the best home record in English football against the side currently sitting top of the away form guide.

Then you factor in Danny Rowe, the away side’s super new signing, who could come up against the manager he loved playing under for years.

This should be a box office watch – so it’s a good job the cameras will keep us well covered this weekend.

Pools have taken 33 points from a possible 35 at home, while in their last outing they notched seven goals at Wealdstone.

Chesterfield’s valiant win at Bromley in midweek keeps them firmly in the hunt.

The additional subplot of course is that James Rowe’s team have come from second bottom when he arrived four months into the season and now they sit locked inside the top seven.

The hosts will be well rested having not played since April 17.

Their players have been able to give their legs some time off, but manager Dave Challinor certainly hasn’t been.

Since their last outing, he has signed three new players - Brad James, Zaine Francis-Angol and Harvey Saunders.

He also went to Wrexham to see this weekend’s opponents take a solid draw at Wrexham.

“It’s been a pretty hectic week,” Challinor told The Hartlepool Mail.

“Thursday was pretty manic in terms of getting things (player signings) across the line as it normally is.

“We had a few in the pipeline and plates spinning and as things progress, you have to make a call in terms of getting certain deals done.

"It’s given us plenty of options and covered lots of eventualities that we potentially didn’t have covered.

"I think all three of the players we’ve brought in will be really good additions to the squad.”

Pools are currently 15 games unbeaten in the National League, the club’s best points return since being promoted from League Two in 2007.

Chesterfield will not arrive in fear, make no mistake about it.

Winning five of their last six on the road there’s little doubt they are improving better defensively - letting in just two goals in those games.

Rowe was thrilled with Tuesday’s victory at Hayes Lane and now wants a super-size scalp in the north east.

Only one side have left Hartlepool with anything since early December but the manager thinks if anyone can do something at Victoria Park, it’s the Spireites.

He told the Derbyshire Times after their midweek success: “We are not getting carried away, it is three points, we need to get to a certain target to get in the play-offs. But it is not about the play-offs, it is about promotion.

“Of course it is pleasing to go from second bottom to sixth but we have got two quick succession games and we need to utilise the squad.

“We put ourselves under pressure but we stuck at it and showed character.

“We know in that changing room in the last five games we have not got the points return our performances deserved, so credit to the lads.”

He added: “We know how tough it will be on Saturday but the team travel with confidence.”
