AFC Fylde’s chairman David Haythornthwaite is a big supporter of the recent decision to extend the number of clubs capable of competing in the playoffs.
Follow the AGM at Celtic Manor, it was announced that clubs were in favour of proposals put forward to allow six places instead of four.
The Coasters won the Vanarama National League North and in three weeks’ time play for the first time in the top level of Non-League football.
They arrive with expectation. Fylde are one of a number of clubs that respect the structure change allows for an increased chance of involvement in the promotion race.
The chairman said: “It’s certainly something we are pleased about, that’s for sure.
“What the summer decision does is keep more clubs interested and not only that, but it keeps fans interested as well.
“It allows you to have an awful first half of the season and not have the second half written off totally. Not that that’s our plan of course!”
Fylde have added seven new signings this close season, the latest Jack Muldoon from Lincoln City.
Manager Dave Challinor signed a new and improved two year contract last week and the chairman said there was no hesitation.
Haythornthwaite added: “It’s certainly something we have been working on for some time and we’re glad we can put it to bed and focus on next season now.
“As soon as you move up to a higher league people start to take notice but we’re delighted he’s staying - there isn’t anyone else we’d rather have.”
