Laurence Maguire – younger brother of England defender Harry - has been given the chance to support his brother in Russia for England’s upcoming World Cup quarter-final against Sweden.
The young defender spent time in Russia for the first two group games, but returned to the Derbyshire club to report for pre-season training.
But after the Three Lions’ heroics on Tuesday against Columbia, Martin Allen was straight on the phone to offer Maguire an unmissable opportunity.
“After the game on Tuesday I got an unexpected phone call from the gaffer, it was a bit of a shock,” Maguire told the Derbyshire Times.
“He suggested I flew out to Russia to see my brother play in the quarter-finals of the World Cup.”
The Spireites defender will miss the club’s friendly against Sheffield FC on Saturday, but says he will report back for training on Monday.
The excitement seems to be building around the national team, and Maguire says it makes it all the more sweeter to see his big brother pull on the famous Three Lions shirt.
“There’s a big buzz around England, a good atmosphere, it’s great to be able to be there and support him.
“It’s a great moment to see him doing so well and the team doing so well. We’re all so proud.”
