Denton was a favourite at The Shay and spearheaded their 2016-17 promotion season.
But when Billy Heath left back in January, it spelt the beginning of the end for the towering frontman.
His face didn’t fit under new manager Jamie Fullarton, and in the summer the forward joined his old boss at Alfreton Town.
He was playing so well for the Reds that an offer he never thought he would get came his way - full-time football with Chesterfield.
Denton faces his former side in the live BT Sport tea time game on Saturday and what he would give for a first goal for his new club back on his old stomping ground.
“I had a great two years at Halifax,” he said. “We won promotion from the National League North and I have a of friends there.
“There were a lot of highlights. The Promotion Final of 2017 has to be right up there with one of my best days in football. We rocked up hoping for three or four thousand and there was 9,000 inside the ground!
“To go up in front of all those fans was incredible. It was hard to leave. When new managers come in and the don’t fancy you that’s it really. You have to get on with it. It’s his decision - hopefully I can go back and show him what I can do on Saturday!
“It’s going to be a tough game. It’s live on the telly, Halifax have just come off a defeat they are going to be even more determined to put that right.”
He wasn’t expecting a return to the pro game, over ten years since going part-time having not made the grade at Huddersfield.
But Martin Allen made the call and months after signing for Alfreton, he was on the move again.
However, he was signed as a firefighter. Remarkably, Chesterfield haven’t won since mid-August but the new man says progress is being made.
“It’s been brilliant, coming from part-time football to a place like this was a bit overwhelming at first but I’m settling in now,” he adds.
“I think my performances are OK, but I just need that goal now really.
“The manager has been great with me. It’s just about that goal for me now. As soon as I get that I’ll be off and away I think.
“We need that little bit of luck. We need to be a bit cuter now and again, but our heads aren’t down.
“I’ve always known I can do more than head a ball and I’m looking forward to showing the Chesterfield fans that too,” he adds.
“At the moment we’re not playing pretty football. We’ve just got to get a win and I don’t think it’s far away. We’re 15 games in already. We’ve now got more Saturday-Saturday weeks and I think that will give us more of a chance to get back on track.”
