Brown: My Harriers Will Have A Target On Their Backs

Phil Brown knows Kidderminster Harriers’ stature will count for nothing when the Vanarama National League North kicks off.

He says that because they’re one of the division’s bigger clubs there will be a target on their back - and it will only get bigger after every match.

Harriers were relegated from the National League after just one season but the former Bolton Wanderers and Hull City boss vowed to stay on despite not being quite able to pull off a great escape.

Their hand has been boosted after Brown persuaded FC Halifax’s experienced central midfield man Luke Summerfield to move to Aggborough this week.

Speaking about his decision to stay and what is ahead, the manager said: “The people who work here care about the club, they really care. There’s no doubt at all about that.

“It was always the case that, if I was still motivated from a football perspective, I would re-sign - you don’t just sign for good people. You have to feel you can still possibly achieve something.

“I’m long in the tooth, too long in the tooth some may say but I don’t agree. I wake up with bags of energy every morning.”

But chatting to the club’s YouTube channel earlier this month, Brown warned: “We’ll have a target on our back and it will be getting bigger and bigger with every game.

“Just because we’re one of the bigger clubs in the league, no side has the divine right to think they’re going to win the division.

“Our players will know from the start of July how difficult this is going to be. Pre-season is going to be hard. It’s going to be mental as well as physical and I hope the players survive it.

“Come the 10th of August we’ll be ready. Some days it will be roll your sleeves up, some days it will be glorious sunshine down at Kidderminster Harriers and passing the ball about.”
