Boston's Players 'Astonish' Pilgrims Manager Coughlan

Boston United manager Graham Coughlan says his players have left him staggered but warned there’s so much work to do to complete the greatest of Great Escapes.

On February 28, the club had 23 points and an instant return to the National League North seemed almost certain.

Just 26 delays on, they’ve nearly doubled their tally - the gap to safety closing from 12 points to just goal difference.

On Tuesday night, a 3-0 victory over play-off chasing Southend United underlined their incredible improvement.

The Pilgrims have won four from five, losing just one of the last eight, and wary Coughlan, 50, doesn’t want all their hard work to go to waste.

“The lads were fantastic and fair play to them, but we’ve got to go again - and again, and again,” he said after the victory with goals from Frankie Maguire, Jimmy Knowles and Zak Mills lifting them level on points with Dagenham & Redbridge.

“We can’t rest on our laurels. It’s three points, that’s all it is and we’ve got some really important matches ahead of us.

“I take my hat off to the players, I really do. They astonish me at times, to be honest with you.

“Southend have a squad of EFL players, and we showed them too much respect in the first half but after half-time we were a different side.”

The Irishman added in an interview on the club’s YouTube channel: “The fans are going to have a massive part to play in this.

“They had a massive part of play over the past two months, and they will have a massive part to play next month. It would have been easy to have stayed at home after Saturday, but their energy pushed us forward.”
