The Silkmen recovered from an early Luke James goal to beat Barrow 3-1 on Saturday - an important result with nearest rivals Sutton United also victorious.
It’s now five straight National League wins since the club’s mini blip in January and they’ve shown they have the fight for the battle.
They’re still two points clear at the summit and have a game in hand ahead of next Saturday’s tricky trip to Dover Athletic.
Following the Barrow win, Askey told MID Communications: “To go a goal down was the worst possible start but we played well and could have scored more goals.
“At one stage you start to think it could be one of those games but the players have got the belief now and it was never in doubt.
“The players have got that winning mentality now and so they should - it’s only one defeat in 18 games. The longer the game went on, the stronger we got and our fitness levels have really started to become a big positive.”
